What it is
What wellness dance events are there in Vietnam?
In Da Nang and Hoi An, in central Vietnam, Extaticaa runs ecstatic dance nights with a cacao ceremony. You move freely to music for about five hours, with no alcohol and no phones on the dance floor. Each night opens with warm cacao in a circle and ends with fire and a quiet close. There are no steps to learn, so anyone can join.
What is ecstatic dance?
Ecstatic dance is free movement to music. There are no steps, no teacher and nobody watching. The music starts slow, rises to a peak, then comes back to stillness, and you move however your body wants. It is sober and phone-free, so it is about feeling your body, not about looking good. Extaticaa runs ecstatic dance nights in Da Nang and Hoi An.
What is a cacao ceremony?
A cacao ceremony is a slow ritual around a warm cup of pure cacao. You drink it quietly in a circle before the music starts. Pure cacao is the whole bean, prepared by hand with spices. It tastes dark and not sweet. It warms the chest and helps people feel calm and present. At Extaticaa in Da Nang and Hoi An, the cacao ceremony opens every night.
Is ecstatic dance spiritual or religious?
It is not a religion, and you do not need to believe anything to join. Some people feel an Extaticaa night as a spiritual practice. Others come only to dance and feel free. Both are welcome.
Is it a party or a club night?
It is a dance night, but not a club night. There is no alcohol and no phones on the dance floor. The music is a journey that rises and falls, with a cacao ceremony at the start and a quiet close at the end. People come to Extaticaa to feel alive without drinking.
What makes an Extaticaa night different?
Three things. A cacao ceremony opens every night. At sunset, a live saxophone plays one short solo in the middle of the floor, the Eros Call. Then live drums lift the room, and after dark there is fire. Most of our nights so far have been by the sea in Hoi An and Da Nang.
Who it is for
Do I need to know how to dance?
No. There are no steps to learn and nothing to get right, and nobody watches you. If you do not feel like moving, you can sit, close your eyes or sway. Some people at an Extaticaa night have never danced in public before.
Can I come alone?
Yes. Most people arrive at an Extaticaa night alone and know no one. You do not have to talk to anyone. The cacao circle at the start is an easy way to meet people if you want to.
I am shy. Is it still for me?
Yes. There is no talking during the dance, and you do not have to talk at any time. Nobody touches you or comes close unless you want it. You can stand at the edge, sit in the quiet space, or leave whenever you want.
Is ecstatic dance safe?
At Extaticaa there is no alcohol and there are no drugs, and phones stay off the dance floor. Our team stays on the floor all night. Nobody touches you unless you say yes, and a no is always respected. If you need help at any moment, someone from the team comes to you.
Can Vietnamese people join?
Yes. Locals and travellers dance together at Extaticaa. Our website, tickets and messages are in Vietnamese and English, and you can pay by Vietnamese bank transfer.
The night
What happens at an Extaticaa night?
It starts with a warm cacao ceremony in a circle. At sunset a live saxophone plays one short solo in the middle of the floor. Then the music and live drums rise, the dance builds to a peak and comes back down slowly. After dark there is fire, then everyone lies down in silence, and the night ends in a circle.
How long is a night, and what time does it start?
About five hours. Recent Extaticaa nights started at 16:30 or 17:00, before sunset, and ended between 21:00 and 21:45. The exact time of each night is on its event page.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear something loose that you can sweat in. You dance barefoot. Bring a water bottle and a light scarf for when your body cools down at the end. Leave jewellery at home if it bothers you when you move. Your phone stays off the dance floor.
Is there alcohol? Can I use my phone?
No alcohol and no substances. Phones stay off the dance floor, and nobody in the crowd films you. Our own camera only works at the opening, the drums and the fire, and you can take a wristband at the door so you are in no photos at all.
Will the cacao make me high? Is it safe?
No, cacao does not make you high. It is a food, not a drug, and you stay fully clear. If you are pregnant, take heart medicine or have a heart condition, tell us before the night and we will guide you.
Can I leave early?
Yes, at any time, and you do not need to explain. You can also step to the edge or sit in the quiet space, and come back to the floor when you want.
Place, price and tickets
Where are the events, Da Nang or Hoi An?
Both. Most recent Extaticaa nights were at Salt, by the sea in Hoi An. Earlier nights were on the beach in Da Nang and on a private rooftop in Hoi An. Each night has its own place, shown on the events page.
How do I get to Hoi An from Da Nang for the night?
Hoi An is about 30 km south of Da Nang. For nights at Salt in Hoi An we ran a return bus from Da Nang. It left Da Nang at 15:40 and drove people back after the night, for 450,000 VND with the ticket included. When a night has a bus, it is on that night's page.
How much does a ticket cost?
Recent Extaticaa nights cost 333,333 VND online before the night and 400,000 VND at the door. Each night has its own price on its event page.
How do I buy a ticket?
Tickets are sold online on Ticketmelon, which takes local and international cards. You can also pay by Vietnamese bank transfer with a QR code. When a night is on sale, the ticket link is on the Extaticaa events page.
When is the next night?
Extaticaa does not run on a fixed weekly date. Each night is a separate event, usually on a Saturday. When the next date is set, it goes on the events page, and people on the email list hear it first.
Do you hold nights in the rainy season?
Our past nights were outside by the sea. Central Vietnam has a rainy season in the last months of the year, so we are looking for an indoor place for the next nights. Join the email list to hear when and where.
